Smart e-cigarette tracks each vape

Smokio is an electronic cigarette that tracks usage and gives insight into its effect on users' health, potentially helping them to quit real cigarettes.

Public smoking bans have become more commonplace around the world in the past few decades, which has led to the rise of e-cigarettes. It was only a matter of time before the smoke-free alternatives followed other electronic devices in becoming smart, and now Smokio is an electronic cigarette that tracks usage and gives insight into its effect on users’ health, potentially helping them to quit real cigarettes.

Although it looks much like a typical e-cigarette, inside it contains a small chip and Bluetooth connector that enables users to link the device to their smartphones. The cigarette then tracks each time it’s used and how much nicotine is being vaped, sending the data to the companion app. Users can check when and where they most often feel they need a nicotine boost in order to help control it. Users can also see how often they succumb to an electronic drag and how their habit compares both financially and health-wise — including a running tally of the number of days they’ve added to their life expectancy — to smoking a real cigarette, which could help to discourage them from lapsing. The level of nicotine can also be increased or reduced through the app. The video below offers more information about Smokio:

Much like Blu Cigs — which vibrate when another e-smoker is nearby — Smokio harnesses smart capabilities to make e-cigarettes more useful than just a way to receive a dose of nicotine. What other existing electronic devices can be connected to our smartphones to hugely increase their functionality?
