There’s no end in sight to the location-based apps being developed for mobile users, including a rapidly growing list of niche offerings. Much the way the Local Books app helps literary fans direct each other to the best local offerings, Typeplace now lets its users capture and share geotagged examples of typography they find interesting. Typography fans begin by downloading the Typeplace app for iPhone, which is priced at USD 0.99. Then, as they go about their daily lives, they can snap photos of noteworthy typography they see along the way. Those photos can then be geotagged, uploaded, mapped and fed into the user’s Twitter stream, giving fellow “typenerds” a way to learn about them and even check them out for themselves. Rewards such as badges and certificates recognize users for their contributions and are displayed on their profiles. To follow each other’s submissions, meanwhile, users can add each other as friends through the app. Typeplace is the creation of Irish Killbot Collective. Is there any limit to the range of hobbies and special interests that can be served and entertained by a location-based app? We don’t think so either. Time to pick one and get developing!
