Amazon India has opened two delivery stations staffed entirely by women, which hopes to improve their chances of economic independence.
Single women in India are often trapped in a poverty cycle, with few options other than marriage at a very young age. Now, Amazon India is hoping to provide an alternative for some through economic independence. The company recently announced that its transportation teams in two locations in the country will consist entirely of women — including delivery and management.
The delivery industry is growing in India, but it is currently dominated by men. Amazon India’s venture will initially see delivery stations at Thiruvananthapuram, in Kerala and Chennai, in Tamil Nadu, staffed by teams of local women. They will deliver packages within a three kilometer radius on scooters. The company also plans to offer self-defense classes for their female employees.
Could other international companies create similar initiatives to enhance women’s opportunities around the world?
