Futuristic hoverbikes set to join Dubai’s police fleet

Currently under testing, the battery-powered vehicle could help officers fly above traffic jams in emergencies.

Self-driving cars and hovering vehicles was once the stuff Hollywood sci-fi films were made of, but these creations are edging their way into modern day life. Dubai’s police force is set to add a series of hoverbikes to their vehicle fleet, with speeds of up to 70 km/h (43 mph) on electric power, with a programmed maximum height of 5m (16ft).

The Scorpion hoverbike, created by Hoversurf, is a single-seat aircraft using a quadcopter-based solution. It is a unique electric-powered vessel combining a motorcycle seat with quadcopter drone technology, bringing speed, agility and stability of flight to the hands of amateur and professional navigators. It can even fly unmanned with a top speed close to 100 km/h. The bike can fly for up to 25 minutes and requires a recharge time of around 3 hours, but batteries can be swapped if a longer flight period is required.

Originally created as an extreme sports tool, its capability for extended use within Dubai’s police force cements the city’s status as one of the most technology-advanced areas. Dubai certainly isn’t a stranger to adopting incredible new technologies. An autonomous robot and drone acting as a mobile surveillance unit was recently deployed to its streets, and an electric passenger drone taxi service may even be introduced to Dubai’s residents soon.
