The Defender is a small tool that includes an alarm, pepper spray, photo capture and automatic emergency service alerts in one.
Most women hope that they’ll never find themselves in a dangerous situation when walking alone, but the sad fact is that many do. We’ve already seen Guardian Angel — the necklace that sends a fake call to wearers’ phones to give them a way out of uncomfortable advances — which could stop any violence from happening in the first place. But in the case when an attack does happen, The Defender is a small tool that includes an alarm, pepper spray, photo capture and automatic emergency service alerts in one.
Currently seeking funding on Indiegogo, the device takes the form of a thin cylinder that can fit into a purse or pocket. As well as containing the highest concentration of pepper spray legally available, The Defender also comes with tiny-but-powerful speaker that can act as a siren or sound phrases to ward off the attacker. When the spray is activated, the device takes a photo of the assailant. The Defender connects to the owner’s smartphone via Bluetooth, which enables the photo to be sent immediately to a medically-trained response team, along with a GPS location. The team is available 24/7 and will also contact local authorities with the information.

The device is currently available to pre-order for USD 159, with one-year of 24/7 monitoring support included. The campaign runs until 5 September. Are there other smart devices that could help prevent violence against women?
